2026 Legislative Priority: Support HB23 — Protecting Students and Preserving Educational Focus

House Bill 23 (HB23) is a key priority for the 2026 Alabama Legislative Session for Log Cabin Republicans of Huntsville. This bill has been filed and is currently awaiting consideration in the House Education Policy Committee, where it must be advanced and brought to the floor for a vote. Last session, a similar measure stalled in committee because it was introduced too late, but this year we are mobilizing advocacy, testimony, and constituent outreach to ensure it progresses.

What HB23 Does

HB23 expands and strengthens current state policy on classroom content related to gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade:

  • Prohibits classroom instruction or discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation in public K-12 classrooms.

  • Bars preK-12 public education employees from displaying flags or insignia that represent gender identity or sexual orientation on school property.

  • Requires teachers and school staff to use pronouns consistent with a student’s biological sex at birth, rather than subjective gender identity.

If enacted, this legislation would take effect July 1, 2026.

Why HB23 Matters

HB23 aims to ensure that public education remains focused on age-appropriate academic instruction, protect teachers’ ability to teach core subjects without ideological content, and support parents’ rights to guide their children’s education. It builds on earlier legislation by extending protections and clarity across all grade levels, not just elementary school.

Log Cabin Republicans of Huntsville is actively working to encourage members of the Alabama Legislature to advance HB23 out of committee and toward a full vote, including through testimony, meetings with legislators, and grassroots advocacy.
